Abstract
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) originates from the Middle East. Today, Iran and India are the leading producers of this fruit in the world. It is an old “superfruit” having multiple nutritional and medicinal properties. Introducing novel food packaging with plant-based bioactive agents brings the refreshing essence of nature to the food industry. Chitosan film with gel and porous characteristics could trap bioactive compounds of pomegranate and could be a good choice for application in food packaging and alternative to nonrenewable sources. This chapter illustrates the fabrication, properties, and application of these valuable packaging materials. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
